According to Plutarch, Lycurgus, while leading Sparta installed reforms that included the requirement that youth of both sexes live nude until young adulthood. He also made physical competition and training the utmost importance during this time. This way boys would become strong citizens and soldiers who were moderate in their passions. Girls too would be physical equals in this training causing rivalry and critics that would spur the boys on to further achievement. It would also allow the girls to become strong women that could bare childbirth easier.
For these and the many other interesting reforms Lycurgus is seen as a Spartan Founder.
