World Factbook Entry

The Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem (GYE), at 28,000 square miles, is one of the largest intact temperate-zone ecosystems on Earth today, encompassing Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks. It is one of the world's foremost natural laboratories in landscape ecology and geology and is a world-renowned recreational site.

Greater Yellowstone’s natural diversity is essentially intact, retaining or restoring its full historic complement of wildlife species—unique in the wildlands of the contiguous 48 states. Habitats range from high alpine areas to sagebrush, hydrothermal, forests, meadows, and other habitat types. All of these are connected, including linkages provided by streams and rivers that course through changing elevations.

Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem Regional Message Board

And the tabloids worry about the end of the world coming from an eruptions of the Yellowstone caldera, eh? Turns out there are other kinds of earth-shattering disruptions. Fwew!

We celebrate Wakan Gli, "Return Sacred", the white buffalo born in the region we call home. Crazy Horse foresaw that one day, when the ways of the colonizer settlers had depleted and disrupted Life, and all of the People of the lands were in their darkest despair, the ways of the Red Road and the Human Beings, the People who knew how to walk it, would return. And those who know how to walk it would teach the newcomers how, in relationship, harmony, reciprocity, and respect.

We regret to inform of an incident at our Canyon Village location in which an armed man making threats with a firearm got into an altercation with our local park rangers resulting in the assailant's death and the injury of one of our law enforcement rangers. The ranger is in stable condition and is being treated. The incident is currently under investigation. No threat to the public remains, but the scene will remain closed for the investigation.

We would like to take the opportunity to remind visitors that while federal law allows those who can legally possess firearms to do so within our borders, hunting and discharge of firearms within the designated park areas is prohibited. Various jurisdictions have varying laws regarding the possession and use of firearms, and it is the responsibility of the individual to know and follow these laws. Federal law prohibits firearms in certain facilities in the park regions (such as visitor centers and government offices): those places are marked with signs at all public entrances.

Note that we also recommend the use of products like bear spray and other proven methods to protect against wildlife. These are much, much more effective than relying on a firearm for protection.

Lastly, it is the opinion of this officer that we'd like to remind citizens and visitors alike that with rights come responsibilities. It takes a real adult to safely and responsibly carry a weapon. This includes being emotionally mature and practicing effective adult communication. A gun doesn't make you a man. You have to become responsible adult first.

The baleful node

Adding a tag because it is important. We may get bombed as a result, but it's worth taking a stand.

Well, we survived the end of the world...again...

I'm here now. Thanks for keeping the lights on.

I've got a craving for tacos. Anyone want a taco?

Happy Earth Day!

The low snowpacks are troubling.

It's always a good day for viewing a geyser. :)
