The Melbourne GP happened in the wee small hours this morning from my PoV, so I missed it. Andrew Benson on the BBC said...

Carlos Sainz led Charles Leclerc to a Ferrari one-two in the Australian Grand Prix as Max Verstappen's domination of Formula 1 stalled. Sainz swept by the world champion's Red Bull into the lead on the second lap before the Dutchman retired with a brake failure after just four laps. The Spaniard then controlled the race as Leclerc passed McLaren's Lando Norris in the first pit-stop period.

The race ended under a virtual safety car after a crash for George Russell. Chasing Fernando Alonso's Aston Martin for sixth place, the Mercedes driver lost control at Turn Six on the final lap and suffered a crash, the car coming to rest on its side, held up in the air by landing on its left-front wheel. Russell was unhurt.

Alonso has since been penalised for "driving in a manner that was at very least 'potentially dangerous' given the very high speed nature of that point of the track". Amongst other effects, that has dropped him to 8th in the official results for the race.

Hello Canada!

The first week of Forest's trivia competition has ended!
Here are the answers:

Forest Trivia Answers Week One

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Question 1 -
What is the connection between these four seemingly random clues?
- Brezhnev
- Andropov
- Gorbachev
- Medvedev
Answer 1 -
- Answer = They are all former USSR/Russian leaders.
- I am aware that Medvedev was in fact a leader after the USSR fell whereas the other 3 were pre-USSR. That was a slight mistake on my part there so I apologise (thanks to Verdant Haven for pointing that out)
- Other Accepted Answers = anything along the lines of the above answer
- Will NOT accept = They are all Russian or They all end in "V"
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Question 2 -

What is the connection between these four seemingly random clues?

- Armourers

- Legends

- Headlights

- Kneeling

Answer 2 -

- Answer = They all have human body parts at the start of the word.

- Armourers
- Legends
- Headlights
- Kneeling

- Other Accepted Answers = N/A

- Will NOT accept = They are all related to medieval Knights

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Question 3 -
What would come 4th in this sequence?
- Laura
- Michelle
- Melania
- ?
Answer 3 -
- Answer = Jill
- Explanation = They are all the first names of the last four US first ladies. So we have -
- Laura Bush
- Michelle Obama
- Melania Trump
- Jill Biden
- Will NOT accept = Practically everything else, lol
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Question 4 -

What would come 4th in this sequence?

- Earth

- Wind

- Fire

- ?

Answer 4 -

- Answer = Water

- Explanation = They are the four elements of life... Enough said really. Some people were asking why it was that I used "wind" instead of "air" which is entirely valid. I have heard both used but I decided to go with wind for this since that is the most commonly used that I've heard. Apologies for any confusion on this one...

- Other Accepted Answers = September, the great song by Earth, Wind and Fire... Well done on the two people who recognised that... I will also accept "air" due to what I've mentioned above...

- Will NOT accept = I think everyone got this so well done!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Question 5; DOUBLE POINTS! -
What would come 4th in this sequence?
- Skateboarding
- Speed Climbing
- Surfing
- ?
Answer 5 -
- Answer = Breaking/Break-Dancing
- Explanation = They are the most recent sports added to the Olympics
- Skateboarding (Tokyo 2020)
- Speed Climbing (Tokyo 2020)
- Surfing (Tokyo 2020)
- Breaking (Paris 2024)
- Other Accepted Answers = Karate as that was also introduced in 2020. Either answer is acceptable really...
- Will NOT accept = Swimming... It may look like they are in alphabetical order which a lot of people went for but unfortunately Squash would disrupt that sequence. I genuinely thought I had messed up and put two answers in there so thanks to all those who gave me a mini heart-attack, hehe...
Trivia Rules
The questions will be released every Saturday
These questions will be in the style of the popular quiz show, Only Connect
I shall post the dispatch with the questions in on the RMB
From that point onwards everyone, residents of forest or embassy regions, has One Week to answer the questions
Answers Must be submitted by Telegram
Only Telegram submissions will be accepted. Any answers posted on the RMB will be suppressed.
ABSOLUTELY NO GOOGLING OF ANSWERS IS ALLOWED if you are suspected of googling, a point will be deducted. Repeat offenders will have more severe sanctions
ABSOLUTELY NO USAGE OF AI IS ALLOWED if you are suspected of using AI, a point will be deducted. Repeat offenders will have more severe sanctions
Results
After the week has concluded, I shall release the answers to the previous week's questions in the same dispatch.
There will also be explanations as to how you could have reached the answers, in case anyone is interested
Alongside this, there shall be a two leaderboards compiled. One weekly leaderboard and one overall leaderboard.
Prizes!
The person(s) who get the most correct answers each week will share the "prize pot" equally which shall be equal to 20.00 DV
At the end of each month, the person at the top of the overall leaderboard shall receive a legendary!
The person who is at the top of the overall leaderboard at the end of the term, shall receive a grand prize of 5 legendaries!
Helpful Tips
If you don't know the answer, just have a guess! There's no harm in having an educated guess, you might just be right!
Watch out for a word question! If the clues seem so random that you just can't find a connection, it could be that it's a word question! The words themselves could be the connection!
If you aren't sure about the answer to the question, when you're submitting them, try to explain your thinking to me! If your thinking is correct but you don't quite get the answer, you'll get half of a point. They all count in the long run!
Take your time! There's no rush... You have a week to answer the questions so you have plenty of time to think and trivialise!
And most importantly...
Have fun!
Only 18 hours left, if you are around please take a few minutes and create some wonders for Mizumigari Sky Gardens. 🇨🇦💥🇨🇦
Yeah - not the best timing - I've had a couple of busy days.
The gardens have been part of my head-canon for years though. It was a good prompt to get me thinking about them again.
Same here, it's audit time at work = overtime and stilly schedules.
For anyone planning to see the eclipse on Monday, please be aware of this...
The Japanese GP is another one in the wrong time zone for me.
So far it's been rainy, so only a handful of representative lap times set. Verstappen topped P1, Piastri P2.
If it's like that tomorrow for qualifying, we could have a topsy-turvy grid.
Seen the last partial eclipse a few years back, we were all out in the parking lot at work passing around a pair of cheap sunglasses. 😎
Parkplace wrote:.. cheap sunglasses. 😎
Very ZZ top.
Please be careful though - standard sunglasss are not enough.
You would need to get to somewhere like Buffalo or Montreal to be on the track for this one.
Well thanks to some heavy cloud cover the eclipse was a bit of a bust here. It got dark and cold though. Next one in these parts will be 3 days before my 89th birthday. What's the chance of me making it?
I was just north of the full eclipse, actually I was able to get a couple good photos only showing a sliver of the sun. The automatic street lights went on and the temperature did drop here. Same here, 84 yrs old next time around.
Or you could, you know, travel somwhere to see one. There are usually 3 or 4 total eclipses per decade, plus 2 or 3 annular ones and a few more partials.
I went over to Strasbourg to see the 1999 one and I'm glad I did.
There's two total eclipses coming in the next 6 years, over here in Australia. I'm hoping i can travel to see at least one of them.
Parkplace wrote:I was just north of the full eclipse, actually I was able to get a couple good photos only showing a sliver of the sun. The automatic street lights went on and the temperature did drop here. Same here, 84 yrs old next time around.
I was just south of totality, and similarly was able to get some satisfactory pictures of a thin crescent sun through the clouds. It was interesting to experience, but it was also somewhat annoying that the day before and after the eclipse were sunny, whereas the day itself was overcast.
I'll be 86 when the next total solar eclipse comes around to where I am, but my plan is to go to where they are long before then. There are two "coming up soon" in 2044 and 2045 that would not necessitate leaving Murica.
The next total solar eclipse where I live will be 2135... :(
Stormaen wrote:The next total solar eclipse where I live will be 2135... :(
You've got a better chance of living to see it than I have!
If we both make it... pint?
I think I've got about until 2090 for my next total solar eclipse. I'll be pretty old but I think I might make it :P
Meanwhile Botswana, Australia and NZ seem to be the places to be.
All places I'd like to see, but do I want to see them with a few thousand other eclipse chasers? Probably. :)
