22. My Heart Burns Like Fire

Soyen Shaku, the first Zen teacher to come to America, said: "My heart burns like fire but my eyes are as cold as dead ashes." He made the following rules which he practiced every day of his life.

In the morning before dressing, light incense and meditate.

Retire at a regular hour. Partake of food at regular intervals. Eat with moderation and never to the point of satisfaction.

Receive a guest with the same attitude you have when alone. When alone, maintain the same attitude you have in receiving guests.

Watch what you say, and whatever you say, practice it.

When an opportunity comes do not let it pass by, yet always think twice before acting.

Do not regret the past. Look to the future.

Have the fearless attitude of a hero and the loving heart of a child.

Upon retiring, sleep as if you had entered your last sleep. Upon awakening, leave your bed behind you instantly as if you had cast away a pair of old shoes.

Me: Eyes as cold as dead ashes indeed. I both fear and respect this one.

Edit: TAO: I'm still considering what the Buddha is to me. Certainly more than a sack full of shredded tapestry.

And how do you know that you have not yet found it?

Oh, it's definitely indwelling. Playing peekaboo it seems...usually when I talk nonsense. grin

Annoying, it is.

A story that I'll share:

I was in a nearby hospital over a year ago, reasons inconsequential. As I was laying in the bed there was an oriental man, a staff member, intently studying patient files on a computer in the same room with me (keeping 'watch' over me.) I'll Name him Buddha. He actually was, y'know. An aspect, for lack of a better word, at any rate.

It took me several yells to attract his attention. He wasn't being mindful. Most amusing incident.

I once ate an egg on a Tuesday night.

I wouldn't share that with too many people ... just sayin'.

I had two this morning. On a croissant.

With salsa.

Much jealous?

Morning eggs are fine to talk about ... but night eggs ... well, not so.

I understand that night eggs can hatch a cockatrice.

But: Shhhhh! That's a secret...or maybe I'm just confused.
