Can democracy be better than despotism when almost every democracy ends up becoming one after a few decades or centuries?
I mean I don't think that's a very fair argument to be making. You can't argue that democracy, solely because of an inevitability that it'll turn into despotism, can't be better than despotism. That entirely ignores the value of democracy itself. To put it to a better example, it'd be like weighing all of socialism and socialist-adjacent systems as no better than communism because well they all end up that way now don't they? I'm no commie but I can at least see the differences, even if its frankly quite naive to think they can exist separately in real life.
I totally agree that democracy is fallible and far from any sort of "utopian" model, but if you're gonna argue the topic you should probably be doing it right.
