The use of "backstabbing" implies he was intent on 'saving' Ukraine, and I don't recall him ever making such a promise. I also don't know if we can quite compare what's happening with that to the Soviet occupation of eastern Europe, especially since from what I can gather Ukraine will remain independent, not turned into a tyrannical communist satellite state like what your example would suggest.
Trump's a negotiator, and one thing we have to acknowledge with negotiations is that there's always some sort of compromise being made on both ends. We might not like Ukraine losing to an aggressive Russia, but I don't think we'd like to further poke the bear (increase hostility and all that) like what the sanctions were doing in Biden's term.
Yeah, I can certainly think of some radical proposals like no-fly zones that would have been much too far. Nonetheless a post-war Ukraine's independence would be pretty severely jeopardized (Putin has broken promises before), and in terms of backstabbing I meant more of a national rather than personal level, hence the comparison with Czechoslovakia. Nonetheless you're definitely right that there's only so much the US can do in light of the current geopolitical reality. As much as the situation in Ukraine worries me I'm thankful for what the current and past administrations have been able to preserve in these times. Things could be a lot worse, and that's cause enough for gratitude.
Just recommending that you watch your phrasing then.
"...Trump, seeing him backstabbing Ukraine..." clearly comes off as a personal backstabbing as opposed to a national-level betrayal. Replace Trump with The United States and you'd have your intended meaning.
