The Federation of Hjem System is a colossal, efficient nation, ruled by Governor with an even hand, and renowned for its rum-swilling pirates, barren, inhospitable landscape, and pith helmet sales. The hard-nosed, hard-working, democratic, devout population of 4.649 billion Hjemis are highly moralistic and fiercely conservative, in the sense that they tend to believe most things should be outlawed. People who have good jobs and work quietly at them are lauded; others are viewed with suspicion.

The relatively small government juggles the competing demands of Defense, Spirituality, and Administration. It meets to discuss matters of state in the capital city of Union City. Citizens pay a flat income tax of 18.6%.

The very strong Hjemi economy, worth 334 trillion Mynts a year, is broadly diversified and led by the Retail industry, with major contributions from Information Technology, Arms Manufacturing, and Uranium Mining. State-owned companies are reasonably common. Average income is 71,911 Mynts, with the richest citizens earning 5.5 times as much as the poorest.

Tie-dye has been outlawed for being 'too occult', candidates celebrate "free speech" by spraying champagne all over anyone who shows up to a rally, afternoon delight in care homes is restricted to a serving of spotted dick at 3pm, and executions often take hours as amateurs attempt to find veins. Crime, especially youth-related, is well under control. Hjem System's national animal is the Frosegle, which teeters on the brink of extinction due to widespread deforestation, and its national religion is Gatism.

Hjem System is ranked 329,251^st in the world and 534^th in Starlight for Most Extensive Public Healthcare, scoring -4.47 on the Theresa-Nightingale Rating.
